BTTS & Totals: football's most-bet alt markets

Both Teams To Score, Over/Under goal lines, and how to read alternative totals.

TL;DR

Beyond 1X2 and Asian Handicap, the two biggest football markets are Both Teams To Score (BTTS) and Totals (Over/Under). Both are 2-way (Yes/No, Over/Under). Both have alt-lines (BTTS in first half, Over 1.5 vs 2.5 vs 3.5). Understanding them is essential.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS)

You bet Yes if you believe both teams will score at least one goal each. No if you believe at least one team will fail to score.

  • BTTS Yes wins on scorelines like 1-1, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 (any non-zero × non-zero).
  • BTTS No wins on 1-0, 2-0, 0-3, 0-0 (one or both sides zero).

When BTTS Yes is value

  • Both teams have leaky defenses (high goals against / match).
  • One side is favoured to attack but the other has scored in their last 8+.
  • Neutral pitches (Champions League away leg) where defensive caution loosens.

When BTTS No is value

  • A heavy favourite playing a defensive minnow that's failed to score 8 of last 10.
  • Derby matches with high stakes — counterintuitively, lots of these are 0-0 or 1-0.

strikey.io surfaces a "BTTS Hit Rate" chip on the player props page — based on last 10 of each team. Treat it as a sense check, not gospel.

Totals (Over/Under goals)

You bet Over if the total goals scored by both teams exceeds the line, Under if it's below.

  • Over 2.5 wins on 2-1, 3-1, 4-0, 2-2 (total > 2.5).
  • Under 2.5 wins on 0-0, 1-0, 0-2, 1-1 (total < 2.5).
  • A scoreline matching the line (e.g. 1-1 on Over 2 push) returns your stake.

Reading "Over/Under 2.5 Goals" data

Looking at "Over 2.5 hit in 6 of last 10" can be misleading. Two questions to ask:

  1. What was the line in those games? If the line was usually 2.5 too, the hit rate is informative. If lines varied, less so.
  2. Against what defenses? Hitting Over 2.5 against bottom-of-the-table sides isn't proof of much.

The match-detail page on strikey.io shows a per-game dot strip for L5/L10/SZN windows. Use it for sense-checking, not as the entire pick rationale.

Combining BTTS + Totals

A bet on BTTS Yes & Over 2.5 is a 2-leg parlay. The legs are correlated (BTTS Yes implies at least 2 goals, which pushes the total toward Over).

  • Correlation lowers the parlay's true probability below what a naive multiplication suggests.
  • Most books *don't* price the correlation, so a BTTS Yes & Over 2.5 parlay can be +EV when both legs are individually strong.

This is one of the most common "soft book" angles in football — but books eventually catch on and will sometimes refuse to combine these legs.
